Obituary
Brother Stephen R. Creagh, FSC, died in Lincroft, in the state of New Jersey, USA, on Friday, June 8, 2018, after a long illness bravely borne. He was 83.
Brother Steve was born in the Bronx, New York, on April 2, 1935, son of the late Edward and Frances (Tillman) Creagh.
He joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools at Barrytown, New York, in 1953 and received the habit in May of that year. He pronounced his final vows in 1960 in Barrytown. He received a bachelor’s degree in physics from The Catholic University in 1958. He earned a Master’s degree from Brown University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Natural Science in 1964.
Brother Steve began his teaching career in 1958 at St. Raphael Academy in Rhode Island. From there he taught at Mater Christi High School in Astoria, New York. In 1965 he traveled to Moshi, Tanzania where he taught at Umbwe Secondary School. Then it was on to Kenya, where he taught in Nakuru, Rongai, Njoro and Subukia, until 1998.
He returned home and spent one year at La Salle Center, Oakdale, New York. He later taught physics at The Prout School in Wakefield, Rhode Island until 2001, and then traveled to South Africa where he served as headmaster and teacher.
In 2007 he returned to the Christian Brothers Center, where he provided assistance to seniors in the local communities until his health began to fail.In March 2017, he moved to De La Salle Hall, a healthcare residence in Lincroft, New Jersey.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday June 13, 2018, at Our Lady of the Star Chapel in the Christian Brothers Center in Narragansett, Rhode Island. He was buried at the Brothers’ Cemetery at the Center.
He was the brother of the late Carol Calby. He is survived by one sister, Jean Devlin of Greenlawn, New York, a niece, Bernadette Devlin, and three nephews, Bruce Calby and Michael and Patrick Devlin.
